How to Build a Career in the Library and Information Science?

STEP 1. Research the Field of Library and Information Science (LIS):

Learn about the different types of libraries, the role of librarians, and the skills required for a career in LIS.

STEP 2. Earn a Degree in LIS:

Look for LIS programs at universities and colleges, and consider online or part-time options if you are unable to attend traditional classes.

STEP 3. Gain Experience:

Volunteer or intern at a library while you are still in school, or consider working in a related field such as education or publishing.

STEP 4. Obtain Professional Certification:

Many states require librarians to hold a professional certification, such as the American Library Association’s (ALA) “Certificate of Library and Information Science.”

STEP 5. Network:

Attend conferences and events related to LIS, and connect with professionals in the field on LinkedIn or other professional networks.

STEP 6. Look for Job Opportunities:

Check job listings on the ALA’s website, as well as on other job-listing websites such as Indeed, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn.

STEP 7. Prepare for an Interview:

Research the library or organization you are interviewing with, and practice answers to common interview questions.

STEP 8. Continue Learning and Growing:

Keep up to date with the latest trends and technologies in the field, and consider pursuing advanced degrees or certifications to further your career.

STEP 9. Join Professional Organizations and Associations:

American Library Association, Special Libraries Association, and state library association are few examples.

STEP 10:

If you are looking to become a school librarian, you will need to obtain a teaching certification and complete a master's degree in library science and education.
